Combi Boiler or System Boiler

Should I change from a system boiler to a combi boiler?

1. Where as a system boiler takes a while to heat up combi boilers heat hot water instantaneously on demand. With a combi boiler a hot water cylinder isn’t needed so you can free up some space by removing the cylinder if you are changing from a system boiler.

2. Combi boilers are more suitable for homes where ideally only one person is using a hot tap/ shower/ bath at one time.

3. If you decide to replace your system boiler with a combi boiler ask for a check first to see if your system is loosing water pressure. A combi boiler works under water pressure and relies on water pressure being maintained. A drop in water pressure implies a leak in the system which may not be evident.

4. If you are having a combi boiler fitted, a good installer will also recommend a de-scaler such as Combimate or similar to be put on the system. We replace many combi boiler heat exchangers due to lime scale build up so a de-scaler is well worth fitting.

5. If you have a de-scaler fitted, such as a Combimate or Combicare don’t forget to ask for it to serviced annually when your boiler is serviced. The fixings can seize and leak through disuse and the cartridge or siliphos balls may need recharging. Give the engineer the make in advance so they can bring the correct refill.
